We believe in community

From the creation of our own education bursary for a local law student off to university to sponsoring the Melplash Agricultural Show and Martin Clunes’ Buckham Fair, we celebrate and support the community of West Dorset.

Education bursary

Launched in 2016, we wanted to help the next generation of lawyers take their first steps in a long and fulfilling legal career. Our Weymouth solicitor, Stephen Jones was inspired to choose Law (despite his then very average results) after a talk at a local college. Stephen went on to become student of the year, a successful solicitor and examiner for Birmingham University’s Law School.

Our bursary is open to students from local colleges and the fund makes a vital contribution towards books, tuition fees and living expenses. Students also have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience with us and we keep in touch with their progress.

The Melplash Agricultural Show

The historic Melplash Show is a major fixture in the local calendar and always a great day out. We have been proud sponsor of this traditional agricultural event for many years, and it continues to attract thousands of exhibitors and visitors every August. The show ring is where winning animals and owners parade in a fitting end to a thoroughly enjoyable day and the time when Partner, Jason Hodnett presents some of the prizes.

We also play our part in keeping rural crafts alive with hedge-laying and ploughing competitions organised by the Melplash Agricultural Society. Partner, Richard King is a keen hedge-layer, Director of the Melplash Show and appeared with the Society on Radio Four’s Farming Today programme talking about the hobby and its heritage.

Buckham Fair

Hosted by Martin Clunes and his wife Philippa on their Beaminster land each summer, we have been the main sponsor of this wonderful event since the fair began in 2008. A huge success and much loved by local people and visitors alike, the fair has raised over £400,000 for Julia’s House Children’s Hospice, Weldmar Hospicecare Trust and Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance.

We are also joint sponsors of the Rescue Dog Championship taking place in local contests and culminating in the grand final at Buckham Fair.

The Smith Family Charity Ball

Bettiscombe’s Henry Smith was one of the first people in the UK to have a heart and double kidney transplant. Once recovered, Henry organised dinner dances in aid of medical charities associated with his condition and we became one of the first sponsors of the charity ball. The event has since raised more than £100,000.

Beaminster Festival

One of our offices is in the heart of Beaminster and this is a brilliant week of music, literature and arts with classical and jazz performances, exhibitions by local artists, sculptors, furniture makers and talks by renowned writers. Events include a street party, open gardens and opera. It’s a world of talent on our doorstep and a natural home for our sponsorship.

Dorset Community Foundation

Raising funds for those most in need across Dorset, since 2000 the charity has distributed over £10 million in grants to good causes and it’s our reason for supporting the Foundation. There are around 2300 registered charities and 4600 community groups doing vital work to help the most vulnerable within our local communities. We’re happy to be able to play a part.

Cattistock Countryside Show

A celebration of Dorset with hand-made crafts, traditional skills, local food and drink and always lots of horses, dogs and competitions, we have sponsored Cattistock for many years. We recently saw the show move to a lovely new setting in Chilfrome.

Cattistock point to point

There’s always a great atmosphere and anticipation of the competition to come in Little Windsor. Our race sponsorship means we get to do the best bit and present prizes to the winners.

Seavington point to point

Held in April with a challenging course around Little Windsor, our decade long support helps fund the attendance of St John Ambulance. There are always exciting horse and pony races, places to picnic and lovely views.

Bridport Literary Festival

Brightening November, the literary festival brings world class writers to the town. Past speakers include PD James, Jeremy Paxman and Dan Snow. We jointly sponsor this very popular event with Waterstones.

Lyme Regis Lifeboat Week

Living by the coast, we respect the water and those who risk their lives to save others. So we are very happy to be part of the RNLI’s Lifeboat Week, which is good fun for all the family and features the incredible Red Devils parachute team.

Bricky Farm Horse Trials

Partner, Tracy Scammell has a passion for all things equestrian and these trials are just the place to showcase that special relationship between rider and horse.
One of the UK’s last remaining home produced eventing competitions, it relies heavily on a small band of volunteers and local supporters every September. We are one of the original sponsors and have watched it grow year on year.

Sport is for all and we support Bridport Rugby Club, Bridport Cricket Club and Broadwindsor Cricket Club.
